The surrounding

The National Park of Gargano: a unique spot along the Adriatic coast. Situated in more than 10 hectares of fantastic woodland, about 500 meters above the sea which you can see at 2 kilometres' distance, this is a place where you really can enjoy what Italy has to offer, freely and in complete rest. You will seldom find a place with more pretty spots... A thick and wondrous "Umbra Foresta"; endless olive woods at Rodi Garganico, the white cliffs of Peschici and the crystal clear waters at Vieste.

Gargano is a promontory, partly mountainous and partly covered with what is left of an old wood, Foresta Umbra. Ancient oak and beech, such as once covered parts of Middle Europe, can still be found here.

Parts of the deep Gargano woods are quite thinly populated as most of the inhabitants live along the coast. Primary industries are fishing, agriculture and tourism.

A panorama route stretches along the coast and connects each of the most important towns - Rodi Garganico, Vico del Gargano, Peschici, Vieste, Mattinata and Manfredonia. The best known town is San Giovanni Rotondo, where Padre Pio's monastery is.
